London, 24/09/2016. Today, a demonstration was held outside the Polish Embassy in London to show support and solidarity with Irish Women (5th annual March for Choice) protesting against the 8th amendment of the Irish Constitution, which states that the abortion is legal only in case of immediate threat to woman's life because the life of the fetous is equal with the life of the mum. From the organiser Facebook page: <<In solidarity with women in Ireland and Poland, united with girls in Canada and Berlin, we gather at the Polish embassy to protest against the endless difficulties affecting personal freedom of female reproductive rights. We want to manifest our ceaseless anger caused by existing and planned deficits of current legal provision. We will do so by participating in speeches and performances. […] On the 24th of September Irish pro-choice groups are organizing the 5th annual March for Choice to protest Ireland's strict abortion law, recently declared by the UN as 'cruel, inhuman and degrading'. Due to the 8th amendment in the Irish constitution, which places the life of a foetus equal with the life of a woman, abortion is legal only if there is immediate threat to woman's life. Abortion is illegal even if women are pregnant as a result of rape, there is a threat to their health or the foetus has terminal abnormalities. Women who have an abortion in Ireland faces a prison sentence of 14 years. 4000 women travel every year abroad for abortions. According to the recent polls, 80% of the Irish society wants to repeal the amendment. Yet, the governments failed so far to call for a public referendum on the matter […]>>.<br />
